Who We Help
A small firm, built around a few kinds of clients
We don’t try to be everyone’s advisor. Our clients tend to fall into six groups, and everything about how we work, from the tools on this site to the questions we ask in a first call, is built around them.
Apple and Intuit employees
Vest calendars, ESPP windows, mega-backdoor Roth room and the tax bill that follows all three. We have worked with people at both companies from first vest to retirement, and we know the plans.
Engineers and executives with concentrated stock
When a large share of your net worth sits in one employer’s stock, you have a concentration problem and a tax opportunity. We build the plan to manage both, lot by lot and year by year.
Small business owners
Reasonable-compensation salary, a retirement plan that fits an S-corp or solo practice, tax planning across the business and the household, and preparing for an eventual sale or transition.
People within ten years of retirement
The decade before retirement is when most of the levers get pulled: when to stop, how to draw down, Social Security timing, Roth conversions and keeping taxes and Medicare premiums from eating the plan.
Going through a divorce or settlement
Dividing accounts and rebuilding a plan under pressure is hard. We work alongside your attorney on the financial side: what to keep, how to retitle it, and what the new plan looks like.
Families whose finances have outgrown a standard advisory relationship
Multiple entities and trusts, real estate, philanthropy and the next generation. Tangent Private Wealth is our family-office tier for a small number of these families.
What our clients have in common
Most of them are in Orange County or the San Francisco Bay Area. Most have more of their wealth tied to their work than they are comfortable with, whether that is a stock position, a business or a 401(k) that has done well. And most of them want one person who knows the whole picture and will give them a straight answer, rather than a team, a product or a portal.
If that sounds like you but you don’t see your situation above, ask anyway. We would rather tell you honestly that someone else is a better fit than take on work we can’t do well.
Pricing
Portfolio management and planning
An annual fee based on the assets we manage, billed quarterly, that includes the financial plan and ongoing advice. No commissions, no product fees, no minimums that exclude people who are early in their careers.
Planning only
A flat fee agreed in writing before we start, based on the complexity of your situation, or an hourly rate for a narrow question. You get the written plan and a ninety-day follow-up; you implement it yourself or with us.
Disclosed before you pay anything
The initial consultation is free. Every fee is in writing before work begins, and the full schedule is in our Form ADV Part 2A.
Our process
What matters to you, what prompted you to reach out, and whether we’re a fit. What to expect →
Goals, timeline, every account and every source of income, and the things that keep you up at night. Documents come in through a secure portal.
Investments, taxes, stock compensation and cash flow in one written plan, stress-tested against the scenarios that could knock it off course, with the first moves spelled out.
We manage it with you, adjusting at every vest, job change, market shock and life event. You always know what is happening and why.
See yourself here?
A first conversation is free and takes fifteen minutes. Bring your questions; we’ll tell you plainly whether we can help and what it would cost.
